Thailand is known for many things, but one of the most prominent is their textiles… I was told by a very close family friend to make sure to get a few suits made, etc. before I left… I had a tuk-tuk driver stop at one of the fabric/tailor shops with out me knowing, and wha-la it opened my eyes to many things (standard tuk-tuk game)!
Well, it freaked me out a little bit until I met Hari , this great guy from Nepal who recently took over a tailor shop in Phuket. He worked with me and even kept his shop open to 1am (while he sent one of his employees to get us some beer and peanuts)… the long and short of the story is that I had 4 beautiful shirts made, 2 dress, 2 casual and a 100% linen sports jacket… let me say the cost is MINIMAL compared to what you would pay in the states, and he had everything wrapped up for me in 36 hours!
At this point I had moved hotels and was in Patong Beach, Hari (without even a hesitation) told me he would deliver me the rest of the clothes to my hotel. He was even 15 minutes early while I was the one who walked into the lobby on time… (I was too busy getting another foot massage! )
Patong Beach is the epicenter of tourism on Phuket Island. Patong is home to all the night clubs and Vegas lifestyle… Party all night… sleep all day (on the beach of course!)
The beauty in Patong Beach comes in the evening when the 1 million Aussie tourists retreat to their hotels and fill the local pubs…most have signs outside that say “Aussie owned”… I guess that is an invitation for them to feel at home to act “the way they do” in public. These bars are easy to spot out- just walk past the pack of bright red strawberry looking people who’s voices carry a good distance!
(they are good people, don’t get me wrong but they sure do stick out in Thailand!)
These chairs and umbrellas line the entire beach, I opted to walk the entire beach back and forth listening to some Jimmy Buffet, Marley, Grateful Dead, DMB, and some other of my favorites… then parked my behind on the sand for 3 hours and worked on that tan!
Know how to roll in style! So, after my 48 hours of feeling uncomfortable in that other guest house- I so nicely checked myself into a 5 star resort hotel on Patong Beach, Phuket to finish off the trip. It was just time for a touch of pampering and huge fluffy bed!
The price is about the equivalent of a generic Marriot room at home, figured I don’t have a whole lot of time left, so why not roll in style!
To read about the trip to James Bond Island read ”Shaken Not Stirred”
The more I read and discover Thailand there seems to be many movies filmed on location here- and the southern islands have been inspiration to many fashion photography shoots, movies, art, etc. Rightfully so, it is beautiful here! The most famous of landmark here is James Bond Island or the real name of Ko Tapu.
The trip turned out to be much more than I expected! It was no question one of the highlights of the Journey, not for the food, but for the scenery! We kayaked in two different places through limestone caves, were up close and mere feet away from wild monkeys, and the staff on the boat was first class- I landed up having such a great time with them, I would take the 10 hour trip again, just for the good laughs I had along the way!
