Getting from one place to another is not impossible here, but like most things in other countries you have to make a few moves first before you can reach your final destination… Which leads me to explain how this little adventure from Ko Phangan (east coast, Gulf of Thailand) to Phuket (west coast, Andaman Sea) all unfolded.
Here is a map link for better understanding.
The trip from Hat Rin (home of the full moon party), the southern peninsula of Ko Phangan. There I took the ferry over to Ko Samui (the only airport in these islands).
Here it is very tricky, unlike America you can have a monopoly here I suppose with the right money… Bangkok Airways owns the airport, so if you want to fly in and out you have to use them…The other option is take a ferry and get to Ko Samui, then take another ferry 5 hours to the main land, then a taxi to the airport and fly with Air Asia.NO THANKS!
For minimal loss of time I spent the extra 20$ to fly from Samaui, Never over think the option of more money for free time!
You know its funny, just the night before (not on purpose) I watched the movie THE BEACH for the first time staring Leonardo DiCaprio… come to find out this was the directors inspiration for the blockbuster hit! Well, it was just that, an amazing journey through many of granite islands- All in search of the “Perfect Beach”…. After seeing those two yahoos who are probably still sleeping on the beach and partying in their bungalow was like living the movie!
The official name of the national park is Moh Ko Ang Thong, it is very interesting- and full of rare wildlife and extreme beauty!
My love of 3rd world countries just for this reason… or let me say almost all other countries aside from what is considered “Western Countries”! Most people who are not native to these countries or have not lived in a place where the best food exists on the street or in someone’s home is not comfortable with the idea of eating in this style… fair enough, but for people like me… it is a no brainer!
Here are some photos of recent street vendors I visited!
I was unable to stay here in Thailand through July 9th, which is the official full moon party, although there seems to be a huge party the week before, and how conveniently I happen to be in Ko Phangan right around that time- they hold a half moon party and a black moon party.. and a… and a…. you get it- there is always a reason to party in Ko Phangan!
The reality is Ko Phangan gets a bad rap for all the partying because I purposely stayed on the other side of the island about as far away from Hat Rin as possible (I preferred better beaches with reefs than touristy stuff) …now, that doesn’t mean I didn’t make my way there…
It is often funny what America thinks the “original” products are that exist in our country are so misleading. Every other nation allows for beer to go unpasteurized, restaurants to have “open air kitchens (minus Europe and Canada), tweaks for the “American” palate (which I think means more to fit the governments FDA ha-ba-lu) I am just thinking that if the FDA couldn’t take their controlling cut in the economy then what would happen to America’s palate and sudo culture?
I was speaking with a close chef friend of mine while on this trip (he is European) and he brought up a very interesting point- “Does your country really practice freedom?”….hmmm…
